Monday, April 7

11:15 am - 12:00 pm

Session # 1: Transfer Equipment & Controls

Presenter: Joe Kendall - Schneider Electric

Transfer systems play a crucial role in generator projects but are often overlooked. As the heart of standby and emergency power systems, understanding these systems is essential. This session explores common misconceptions and provides valuable insights for engineers at all levels.

  • Discover key concepts and best practices for transfer system design and operation.

  • Gain clarity on frequently misunderstood aspects to enhance system reliability and efficiency.

1:30pm – 2:15 pm

Session #2: Grounding of Standby Power Systems

Presenter: Jon Pinney - Buckeye Power

Proper grounding is essential for the safety and functionality of Emergency Power Supply Systems (EPSS). This session provides a comprehensive exploration of grounding practices, focusing on critical components and code requirements for standby power systems. Participants will gain insights into the differences between separately derived and non-separately derived systems and how grounding configurations impact system performance.

  • Learn when to use 3-pole versus 4-pole automatic transfer switches and understand the specific code requirements for 4-pole switches.

  • Explore the function and application of ground fault protection devices, along with best practices for neutral-to-ground bonding and required system signage.

3:00 pm – 3:45 pm

Session #3: Generator Paralleling

Speaker: Mariano Rojas - Cummins Inc.

Paralleling generator systems is a sophisticated yet vital aspect of modern emergency power systems. This session provides a detailed overview of the essential features and control strategies necessary to parallel generator sets effectively. Engineers will gain a deeper understanding of how to enhance system reliability while addressing potential failure points.

  • Compare distributed logic architecture with traditional switchgear paralleling to identify the most efficient solutions for your system.

  • Understand critical control functionalities and explore strategies for minimizing single points of failure in paralleling systems.

10:30 am – 11:15 am

Session #4: Battery Energy Storage Systems

Speaker: Mark Mcneff

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are transforming how energy is stored and utilized, playing a pivotal role in the expansion of renewable energy and microgrid projects. This session offers a comprehensive overview of BESS technologies, their applications, and their evolution over time.

  • Explore the different types of BESS and how they support renewable energy integration and microgrid functionality.

  • Gain insights into the history, development, and future trends shaping battery energy storage solutions.

11:30 am – 12:15 pm

Session #5: Microgrid Codes and Standards

Speaker: George Langton

As energy systems evolve, microgrids are becoming critical for improving resilience and efficiency. This session delves into the advanced control strategies needed to integrate and operate inverter-based resources within microgrids effectively. Participants will gain valuable insights into optimizing microgrid performance and flexibility.

  • Learn about control topologies and strategies for managing multiple inverter-based resources within a microgrid.

  • Explore simulation techniques and design practices that enhance grid resilience and operational efficiency.
